Endodontic Care from Dr. Michel’s Topeka Office

November 15, 2011

The word “endodontic” may not mean anything to you, but chances are the words “root canal” do.

Many patients have a fear of root canals, which stems in part from a time when modern tools or anesthetics weren’t yet available. Modern root canal therapy from Michel Dental, on the other hand, is surprisingly comfortable, and many patients feel so relaxed during their appointment that they fall asleep.

But First, What Is Endodontics?

Endodontics is concerned with the internal structure of teeth. When a tooth’s internal structure becomes damaged in some way, whether because of a deep cavity, tooth fracture, or some other form of trauma, root canal therapy can be necessary in order to save the tooth and rid it of infection, pain, and swelling.

How Does A Root Canal Work?

If you have a tooth that’s suffered internal damage, Dr. Michel can help you by removing the infected tissue that’s inside and replacing it with a biocompatible material. Then, we’ll place a custom-made crown over your tooth to protect it. This crown has the potential to last for a lifetime.

To find out more about endodontics, root canals, or any other service that Michel Dental offers, give our Topeka office a call today to schedule a visit with Dr. Michel. We serve patients from Topeka, Emporia, Lawrence, Manhattan, and surrounding areas.

Halloween Is the Perfect Time to Teach Your Little One about Brushing and Flossing

October 28, 2011

In about three days from now, the wait will be over—Halloween and all of its thrills will finally be here. That means costumes, of course, but more than that it means piles of candy.

Candy, of course, has a bad a reputation when it comes to teeth. As you’ve been told all your life, candy causes cavities. And it’s true. But while sugar can have a detrimental effect on oral health, where’s the harm in splurging now and then?

That’s why Dr. Michel and the rest of our team at Michel Dental would like to wish everyone a happy, safe, and fun Halloween.

But we’d also like to encourage you to use Monday as a time to reinforce the basics of good oral health. Brushing and flossing are essential to maintaining a healthy smile, and learning how to do each at a young age can go a long ways towards helping your little one develop healthy habits that will last well into adulthood.

Have any questions about how you can help your son or daughter learn to brush and floss? Feel free to give our Topeka office a call today. Dr. Michel and our team would be happy to answer any questions you might have or set up an appointment for you.

Stop Sleep Apnea with an Oasys Sleep Snoring Device from Dr. Michel

October 17, 2011

Do you catch yourself drifting off at work, even though you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep each night? Do you feel irritable or have trouble concentrating? Has your partner ever complained about your snoring?

All of these could indicate that you have a condition called sleep apnea, which, if left untreated, could increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other complications.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Patients with sleep apnea have trouble breathing while they sleep. And by trouble, we mean that patients actually stop breathing for at least 10 or more seconds.

Sounds serious, doesn’t it?

Raising Money for Aldersgate through the Jeans and Jewels Benefit

September 30, 2011

For close to 30 years, Dr. Michel and Michel Dental have been associated with Aldersgate Village.

Aldersgate Village is one of the largest retirement communities in Kansas and a member of the United Methodist Homes network. We have had the honor of serving the community together through a dental clinic we started with them. Run by Beth, one of our RDH’s, the clinic provides weekly dental care to residents of Aldersgate using donated equipment.

Recently, we had the opportunity to show our support for Aldersgate in another way. A special benefit called Jeans and Jewels was held at the downtown Ramada Inn. The purpose was to raise money for Aldergate’s new Recovery Center, which will be used to give residents of the retirement village and others within the community a place to recover after a long hospital stay. Money was raised through an auction and a silent auction.

It was a great event, and we’re happy to still be involved with such a great organization.

Call our Topeka office to find out more about our work with Aldersgate or to schedule your next appointment with us.

Periodontal Treatment from Dr. Michel and Michel Dental

September 16, 2011

Did you know that 75% of all Americans over 35 have some form of gum disease, even if it’s only a mild form?

We don’t mean to scare you with that statistic; we only want you be aware of the fact that gum disease can affect your smile without you even knowing it. Often, the only indication of a problem is bleeding gums, and by then gum disease has already set it.

If it’s not treated soon, even more serious problems like tooth loss or gum deterioration can occur. What’s more, other health problems, like heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, pre-term birth, and gastric ulcer re-infection have been found to share a connection with gum disease.

Relieve Painful Symptoms with TMJ Therapy from Michel Dental

August 26, 2011

Are you bothered by a range of painful symptoms that just never seem to go away—symptoms like migraine headaches, earaches, or pain in your neck, temples, or shoulders?

If so, consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Michel, as these are all signs that you may have temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.

Caused by a misaligned bite, stress, or possibly other factors, TMD can seriously damage your smile if it’s left untreated.  That’s the bad news. The good news is that it can be treated, and often with something as simple as oral appliance therapy.

Treating TMD with Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy involves, first of all, determining your optimal jaw alignment and, second of all, creating a custom-made oral appliance that will help correct that alignment.

How long you will need to wear your oral appliance and at what time of the day will depend on your own situation. In some cases, it may only be necessary to wear your oral appliance while you sleep. In other cases, you may need to wear it during the day, but only for a short amount of time. A consultation visit at our Topeka dental office should tell us all we need to know to get your treatment started.

If you think you may be suffering from symptoms of TMD, contact our office today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Michel. We can answer any questions you might have, whether about TMD, TMJ therapy, or any of our preventive, cosmetic, and periodontal services.

Call us today.

We serve patients from Topkea, Emporia, Lawrence, Manhattan, and surrounding areas.

Transform Your Smile with Professional Teeth Whitening from Michel Dental

August 12, 2011

Teeth discoloration happens for a variety of reasons. Often, it has to do with the foods and drinks you consume, but aging can be another factor, as can smoking and certain medication likes tetracycline.

But even if discoloration is a fact of life, you don’t have to live with it. Michel Dental offers professional teeth whitening services to help patients add sparkle to their smile and improve self-confidence. Patients can even decide whether they would prefer in-office or at-home teeth whitening.

In-Office and At-Home Options

With in-office teeth whitening, Dr. Michel can help you have a smile that’s as much as eight shades brighter, and in just one short visit to our office.

With at-home whitening, you can have professional results without even leaving your home. All you need are a pair of custom made whitening trays and a supply of whitening gel. It will take between one to two weeks for the most dramatic results to appear, but you should notice a change in your smile after just a few days.

For longer-lasting results, patients should try combining in-office whitening with sporadic at-home whitening treatments. By combining the two, there’s almost no limit to how long you can enjoy your dazzling new smile.

If you’d like to talk to Dr. Michel about professional teeth whitening and how it works, contact our Topeka office to schedule a consultation appointment. We serve patients from Emporia, Lawrence, Manhattan, and surrounding areas.
